What were they thinking?

It seems that the entire world has gone completely crazy. Yes, I am referring to not being able to get xmms on Ubuntu anymore. And I thought things were messed up when Slackware did it as well. What were they thinking? Yes, I realize that xmms was old, but you don’t see me throwing out my grandmother because she’s old do you now? The fact is that xmms is THE SINGLE BEST mp3/ogg player for Linux, hands down. It’s small, it stays out of your way, IT JUST WORKS. Shame on you for forcing me to use some crappy, hundred library dependent, server-client type, obtrusive, ugly and broken media client like amarok or the like….

I found all this out yesterday when I decided to play some music on my Ubuntu 8.04 laptop. I clicked on the file and was presented with amarok. I quickly closed down the client and went for apt-get install xmms. Guess what. It’s not there! I looked around for a suitable replacement and there just are none. Xmms2 is a pain to get working, and even beep, which I remember being quite like xmms a while back has turned into an itunes clone. Not to mention you need to add a command line switch to tell it whether or not you are trying to play a local file or something over the net. What kind of crap is that?

I guess I will try and compile xmms for Ubuntu tonight if I get the chance. Wish me luck!

I thought I email’d you that?? What I find funny is that some of the xmms plugins are STILL in the repos! Jackasyn is a XMMS output plugin that let’s you route the audio to Jack and then to any other jack compatible application like Ardour.

Oh and PS….try Audacious. Only issue I have with it is icecast streams. Other then that it works fine.
