NAS

Simpleshare NAS
I, like most of you, could use some more hard drive space for my programs, media, and whathaveyou. I have been, for a while now, looking at the rapidly falling prices of 500GB USB2 HDD’s and salivating. I figured it wouldn’t be long before I would just stop procrastinating and get one. I have been using a few different USB drives, the largest being a 250GB drive. It’s quite inconvenient when you have to span multiple USB devices because they are slow, and in my case, not all are hooked up and running at any one time.

Well, just a couple days ago I spied a wonderful deal on buy.com for a Simpletech 500GB NAS. This really peaked my interest because, as a NAS, I can hook it directly to my network, and best yet, it’s the same price or even slightly more inexpensive than just a bare USB2 drive. It also boasts web setup (yes, it works on linux), it has a built in print server, and you can connect more USB drives to this thing and even raid them if you like.

Anyway, this was just what I was looking for so I bought one, and to my surprise, it arrived the very next day! The thing works great as far as I can tell. It is a linux sbc as far as I can tell, running web services for configuration, and smb (and NFS too?) for file sharing. It was easy to set up, and it’s easy to use. If you are looking for some more storage, you should really check this out!
