Homeward Bound

Bind9
Yup. Finally took the plunge the other day and installed bind on my home server so I have local DNS. All in all, it was really painless. I followed a nice tutorial available at http://www.ubuntugeek.com/dns-server-setup-using-bind-in-ubuntu.html which details the entire simple process. The only snag I hit was after I was complete, I could resolve external domains, but nothing on my own. After a lot of “digging” (pun intended), I finally figured out that in the tutorial they don’t tell you to remove all the commented lines out of your zones files. Once I did that, everything was up and working great! Now I am sure there is all kinds of neato things I can do now that I have local authoritative DNS, but for right now I am really happy with being able to get to machines by name without having to remember IP addresses or update multiple host files!
