Off the Grid
Most times, I really don’t realize what a nerd I am… or my family. Surprisingly enough, they are pretty nerdy too. I learned that this weekend.
You see, this weekend around 10am on saturday morning, my internet service stopped. It seems there was some sort of problem with low voltage on the repeater outside the building, and almost everyone in the complex with internet was affected. Well, the repeater didn’t get fixed until early this afternoon, leaving my family without internet access for more than 24 hours. All I can say is that it was painful and funny at the same time.
For me, I kept getting irritated that I wanted to check my email and my rss feeds and couldn’t (well, until I made use of the free linksys wifi signal that was invading my home). It was still a pain because I had to use a web based mail client, and my feed reader, which sits on my server at home, still couldn’t get any signal. I still think I did pretty good about it though, but then again, I had a multi hour Christmas shopping trip on saturday to help me get through some of it. My wife did very well too!
That brings me to my daughter. I thought she was going to have a stroke. Now she didn’t complain too much or too loudly, however, one could notice the extreme sense of urgency in her voice when she inquired on occasion when the internet was going to get fixed. I thought it was funny anyway 😉 The moment it finally came back on she sequestered herself in her room and has hardly made a peep or an appearance since.
Hmpf. Must run in the family I guess 🙂
