Catching up

New Apartment
I bet you all are just itching to see what I have goten myself into. Well, here it is. It looks really small for some reason in the pics, but it’s 200 sq ft bigger than the last place.

It’s been another busy week here at the Fessenden residence. Those 12 hour days outside the house don’t seem to leave much left in the way of freetime just yet as I am the only one here. Well, that’s not true. I now have all my ferrets and my 2 cats here with me, and they eat up a bit more of my time to look after. At this point, though, I really enjoy their company.

Work was nice again this past week. I almost keep waiting to wake up drooling into the keyboard of my last job. One of the reasons I took this position is that my friend who recommended it works there, and after a year, he still really likes his boss (I like him too), and after meeting all the other guys, they do as well. Not only that, but I have met my bosses boss, and his bosses boss, and they are all really decent guys. maybe I have been working for such nasty people for so long previously that I find this hard to accept at face value. It’s surely an odd feeling, but a very nice change of pace.

Philly. What can I say about Philly? Well, where I work it’s very clean and nice. The people in Philly are generally very nice as well. Again, to me that is very strange. The “R”, which is Philly’s regional rail system and the train that I ride everyday is clean and comfortable and well maintained as are the “R” trainstations. Now the “L”, which is the local, or the subway, is also quite nice in comparison to other subway systems I have been on, but not as nice as the “R”. The outskirts of Philly in some areas appear to be a wasteland… That is to say that there are a lot of former comercial properties that are vastly underused and in some cases abandoned, which, I am sure, leads to some of the grafiti and such. With a little elbow grease and some money most could easilly be turned back into thriving business communities, and it would definately pretty up the areas which aren’t right now very attractive.

Now in contrast, Downingtown, where I now live, is absolutely beautiful with vast green spaces (I even have a creek that run’s right next to my building), clean air, good shopping, good eats and nice neighbors. In fact I went to my car this morning to find a Mallard Duck sitting in the creek in front of my car. “Hello Mr. Duck.” “Quack.”

Back to the apartment. I spent most of my Memorial day working on it. I went to Ikea for the first time in the AM and came home with a wine rack, a tv stand and 2 end tables, all for a measley $120. What a bargain! This is nice looking furniture too. Oh, and my mother bought me a new hand help can opener there as well – the kind that cuts throught the side of the cans. Brilliant! So I spent my day putting tables together and wiring/hooking my internet access back up. Good thing I bought a new vaccuum too – I needed it!

I also picked up a 50 foot ethernet cable to be able to run it into my bedroom where my desk is now, from the AP next to the tv in the livingroom. The problem is I checked today and there is *no* clearance under/above/around my bedroom door whatsoever. I cannot run the cable in there without pinching it off if I close the door. So what are my alternatives? Not sure where to go on this one. The only thing I can think of is a wireless bridge, but they are hard to find (so far), and cost $100. Unfortunately, drilling a hole is just not an option here.

Lastly, I waned to mention that I should be able to do a new Dell/Ubuntu Laptop review soon. It seems a friend is going to have one shipped here for me to be able to take a peek at. I’ll make sure to let you all in on the details as I do. Just wondering if there was anything specific anyone wanted to know about it while I am looking, before I pack it up and send it off to it’s owner? Just leave me a comment or two.

    Hey Linc,
Thanks for your work on The Linux Link Tech Show! I really enjoy it! I have some things I’d like you to look into while playing around with the Dell laptop.

Firstly, what is the real-world battery life on it?

Second, how does the display look? Does it look washed out or anything?

Last, but not least (probably most important) does all the hardware work correctly? Do all of the drivers that dell put in their function correctly?

Reason I am asking is that I am interesting in purchasing one myself, but these questions have been on my mind ever since the laptop was released.

    Thanks Linc!
