DNS
This weekend while I was doing multiple installs on that laptop-server, I noticed something. I noticed that ssh’ing to my new server was obscenely slow. And this was right after I added the hostname into bind! After fiddling about with things for a few minutes it occurred to me that I might be having a problem with reverse dns lookups. A quick nslookup proved that theory to be true. Apparently, it’s necessary for you to actually have *entries* for your machines in the dns’s rev file 🙂 Once that was setup, things were working much faster across my entire network.
